Protecting Your Privacy When Using AI Tools: What You Should Know

July 28, 20252 min read

Today's topic is something super important: your privacy.
AI tools can be really helpful (and sometimes even fun), but if you’re anything like me, you might wonder, “Is my information really safe when I use this stuff?”

That’s a great question. And the answer is—you can use AI safely, but you need to know a few privacy basics first. Think of it like locking your front door. You don’t have to be paranoid, just aware.

Let’s walk through it together, nice and easy.

1. Don’t Overshare with AI

It’s tempting to type out all the details when using a chatbot or AI app, but here’s the thing—AI doesn’t need your full name, address, or Social Security number to help you plan dinner or write an email.

💡 Quick Tip:
Never share personal information like:

  • Full names

  • Birth dates

  • Credit card numbers

  • Passwords

If you wouldn’t say it out loud in a busy coffee shop, don’t type it into an AI tool.

2. Stick to Trusted AI Platforms

Not all AI tools are created equal. Some are trustworthy, some are… not so much. If a tool feels sketchy, or the website looks a little “off,” trust your gut.

💡 Quick Tip:
Use AI tools from well-known companies or those recommended by trusted sources. When in doubt, Google it first: “Is [tool name] safe to use?”

3. Be Careful with Free Apps

Some free apps aren’t really free—they collect your data and sell it. (Yikes.) Always read what permissions an app is asking for. If a grocery list app wants access to your contacts, something’s fishy.

💡 Quick Tip:
Look at reviews, check the privacy settings, and when an app asks for extra access, ask yourself, “Do they really need this?”

4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Okay, I know password talk is boring—but it’s still your best defense. If you use the same password everywhere, it’s like giving out a master key.

💡 Quick Tip:
Use different passwords for each account, or use a password manager like LastPass or 1Password to keep track of them for you.

5. Check Privacy Settings Regularly

AI tools (and pretty much all apps these days) have privacy settings. Sometimes the default settings share more info than you’d like.

💡 Quick Tip:
Go into your settings and look for options like:

  • “Do not share my data”

  • “Limit data collection”

  • “Opt-out of tracking”

Take two minutes to tighten up your settings—it’s worth it.
