As a Woman Over 50 How to Use AI When You’re Too Overwhelmed

How to Use AI When You’re Too Overwhelmed to Know What to Ask

September 05, 20262 min read

When something suddenly goes wrong, “just ask AI” isn’t always helpful.

The problem may be too confusing, too emotional, or too unfamiliar to turn into one neat question. You don’t know what information matters yet. You may not even know what you don’t know.

That is when AI can help you organize the problem before you try to solve it.

Don’t Ask AI to Solve Everything Yet

When you feel overwhelmed, you don’t need to begin with a carefully written prompt. Start by describing what happened in ordinary language—even if the explanation is messy.

Then ask AI to help you separate the situation into three parts:

  • What needs attention immediately

  • What information you still need

  • What can wait until later

AI may not know the right decision, and it should not replace a qualified professional when one is needed. But it can help turn a cloud of worry, unfamiliar terms, and unanswered questions into something you can examine one piece at a time.

The goal isn’t to hand your judgment over to AI. It is to clear enough mental space to use your judgment.

Try This With AI

Something has happened, and I feel too overwhelmed to know where to begin. I’m going to describe the situation in my own words. Don’t try to solve everything immediately. First, organize what I tell you into three sections: what may need attention now, what information I need to gather, and what can probably wait. Point out anything important that I may be assuming without knowing for certain. Then ask me one question at a time to help me identify my next reasonable step.

You can add information as AI asks questions. You do not have to understand the entire problem before beginning the conversation.

What This Can Look Like in Real Life

A tidy prompt is one thing. Using AI when you are cold, grieving, and holding a furnace quote you can barely think past is something else entirely.

In this video, I share what happened when my furnace died during a Montana winter, just two weeks after my mother passed away. AI didn’t provide the wisdom or make the decisions for me. It helped me work through the questions my own life experience had taught me to ask—including one question prompted by a tiny metal pin I nearly ignored.

AI doesn’t have to replace your experience to be useful. Sometimes it simply helps you organize what you know, uncover what you don’t, and find a place to begin.
