Why AI Advice Can Feel Unrealistic After 60

Why AI Advice Can Feel Unrealistic After 60

September 09, 20262 min read

Have you ever asked AI how to improve your life and received a plan that sounded reasonable—but completely unrealistic?

Apparently, this imaginary version of you has unlimited energy, no responsibilities, and a remarkably cooperative life.

Why AI Gives You an Overwhelming Plan

AI can be incredibly useful, but it cannot automatically know what your days actually look like.

When you ask a broad question such as, “How can I develop healthier habits?” AI has to fill in everything you didn’t tell it. It may assume you have plenty of time, energy, money, and motivation. The result can be a perfectly organized plan that you will never realistically follow.

That doesn’t mean you failed at using AI. It means AI needs more information.

Give AI Your Reality, Not Just Your Goal

Instead of only telling AI what you want to accomplish, explain what it must work around.

You might mention:

  • How much time you realistically have

  • Your usual energy level

  • Family, work, or caregiving responsibilities

  • Physical or financial limitations

  • What you have already tried

  • How small you want the first step to be

You don’t need to reveal anything deeply personal. Just give AI enough context to understand the difference between an ideal plan and one that could actually work in your life.

AI becomes much more helpful when it stops planning for an imaginary person and starts helping the real you.

Try This With AI

Copy the prompt below, then replace the words in brackets with the change you would like to make.

I want to [describe the change you want to make], but I need it to fit my real life. Before suggesting a plan, ask me five questions—one at a time—about my current routine, available time, energy level, responsibilities, limitations, and anything I have already tried. After I answer, suggest one small, realistic action I can try this week. Do not give me a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Knowing how to get better advice from AI is one part of the solution. The other is letting go of the idea that meaningful change must begin with a dramatic overhaul.

In this video, I share a more personal look at why tiny habits can be more powerful—and much easier to begin.
